                        <description>University of Illinois at Chicago sociologists have received a $420,000 National Science Foundation grant to study how local communities respond to the issue of immigration. "We're interested in addressing how some communities come to be fairly welcoming to immigrants, how some communities build institutional barriers against immigrants and how some take it as it comes," said Pamela Popielarz, associate professor of sociology and one of the study's principal investigators.</description>

                        <description>The UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has released its first e-AtLAS Awards issue detailing the awards won by LAS faculty, students, staff and alumni in the 2008-2009 academic year. During this time, LAS faculty were awarded over $59 million in external grants, while LAS students travelled all over the world using scholarships and fellowships and staff and alumni were granted awards for their work, studies and service to their communities.</description>

                        <description>In honor of professor of mathematics, statistics and computer science Anatoly Libgober's 60th birthday, the same department will be hosting a conference on Algebraic Geometry.  The conference will bring together a wide variety of speakers from universities across the globe.  While free, the conference requires registration, and will also sponsor a banquet at the restaurant Athena on Friday, October 16, at 6:30 p.m. for the cost of $25 per person.</description>

                        <description>Frances Aparicio, professor of Latin American and Latino studies, has made broadening the understanding of Latino culture a hallmark of her career.  She has been selected as one of the 2009 University Scholars, which honors faculty members for superior research and teaching, and provides $10,000 a year for three years.  Her current research examines issues of authenticity, globalization and the mainstreaming of Latino culture in music, dancing, language and literature.</description>
